19 – 28 AUGUST WITH THOMAS DAUSGAARD & NINA STEMME
Summer Music Festivals including Salzburg International Festival debut
For their second tour in August the Swedish Chamber Orchestra is joined by Music Director Thomas Dausgaard and soprano soloist Nina Stemme for performances at some of Europe’s major summer festivals including it’s debut at the Salzburg International Festival on 28 August. Complete details of the summer tour will follow this Spring in a separate press release.
From a modest start as the resident chamber orchestra for the Örebro municipality in Sweden, the energy and conviction of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra’s members has led them to an established international reputation. Together with Danish conductor, Thomas Dausgaard - who has been the orchestra´s Music Director for 13 years - the tightly knit ensemble of 38 regular members has toured throughout Europe and North America on a number of occasions garnering great reviews:
“It has been a longstanding complaint in the classical music world that as recordings and jet travel have shrunk the globe, an international sound has been fostered that has filtered out regional differences in timbre and interpretation ... And every now and then an orchestra comes along with a sound that is surprising and fresh.”
“Imagine the London Sinfonietta crossed with say the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and you might come up with something near the flexibility offered by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra."
Conducting this year’s Spring tour HK Gruber is no newcomer to the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. As Artist-in-Residence for contemporary music in Örebro since 2006 Gruber has led the ensemble in programmes ranging from his own compositions, Kurt Weill, Hans Eisler and Igor Stravinsky to new and upcoming composers that have included Brett Dean and James MacMillan. From early on the Swedish Chamber Orchestra realised the benefits of establishing an on-going working relationship with specialists in various fields not only to help develop the ensemble´s musical style but also to keep the musicians abreast of the musical world at large.
HK Gruber´s extraordinary knowledge and enthusiasm for contemporary music has played a significant role in the Swedish Chamber Orchestra´s development and included in their discography are two recordings with him on the Swedish label BIS: Water Music (2009) featuring works by Brett Dean and Manhattan Broadcasts (2003) comprising Gruber’s own compositions. Manhattan Broadcasts is a work dating back to Gruber’s formative years as a composer and is featured in this Spring’s tour.
Leila Josefowicz is performing for the first time with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra on this tour and with her she bring Adams’ Violin Concerto which she recorded in 2003 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Adams himself.
